Hetzner: First European Hoster with Ampere® Altra® Based Dedicated Servers
Gunzenhausen, Germany – 19 July 2022
19 July 2022

Hetzner Online just launched two new dedicated servers with an Ampere Arm-based Cloud Native Processor. This makes Hetzner the first on-demand hoster in Europe to provide Arm-based dedicated servers for customers to rent.

Only a few months ago in March, Hetzner announced their partnership with Ampere, a manufacturer who specializes in building datacenter-grade Arm-based compute products. Partnerships like this allow Hetzner to diversify the CPUs in their server lines to meet the needs of their customers who require having a specific brand.

The Arm64-chip provided by Ampere is the Ampere® Altra® Q80-30. In tests, the Cloud Native Processor stood out with great performance and power efficiency. For this reason, the newest server line, the RX-line, is now available. At the moment, the dedicated server models included in that line are the RX170 and the RX220.

Main features of the RX-line:

  • Arm-based architecture: The servers are based on Arm64 architecture, with a Neoverse N1 design, which was built around the RISC (reduced instruction set computer) principle, so the cores are able to process the smaller instructions quite fast. Arm is also inevitably tied to SoC, which stands for system-on-a-chip and refers to the fact that multiple parts of a traditional computer system are combined in a single chip. SoC brings the advantage of saving energy and space, and, therefore, decreases the costs for Hetzner customers.

  • Very high number of cores: The new dedicated servers come with an impressive total of 80 cores that can make quick work of even the most CPU-intensive tasks. Each core is single-threaded, which means that every thread is handled with highest performance.

  • Performance per price: Hetzner customers are going to be able to get way more compute cores in comparison to other servers in the same price bracket on the market. The RX170 and the RX220, which both have 80 cores, will only cost € 169 and € 219 a month plus a setup fee, respectively. In comparison to traditional x86_64 CPUs, two single-threading Arm-based cores (one thread per core) easily outdo one hyper-threading core (two threads per core).

With 128 GB DDR4 registered ECC memory modules and 2x 960 GB Datacenter NVMe SSDs, the smaller model RX170 also meets the high expectations that are nowadays put on datacenter-grade products. With the RX220 you can even expect twice as much memory and a storage of 2x 3.84 TB Datacenter NVMe SSDs.

The RX-line can be used for just about any kind of use case that requires multiple cores, including virtualization, applications related to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and more. Additionally, the quality and performance are suitable for business customers.
