Gcore Scales Global Cloud Infrastructure with Ampere® Altra® Processors for High-Performance, Energy-Efficient Compute

29 April 2025

INTRODUCTION

As demand for Arm-based compute skyrockets, Gcore faced a pivotal challenge: how to expand its global infrastructure with high-performance, cost-efficient, and sustainable solutions. Gcore leveraged Ampere® Altra® processors to meet escalating customer needs, including cloud gaming providers, delivering unprecedented core density, power efficiency, and rapid deployment. This strategic shift not only solidified Gcore's market position but also championed data sovereignty and operational excellence worldwide.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Gcore is a global cloud, AI, and security provider with 180+ points of presence (PoPs), 200 Tbps of network capacity, and more than 14,000 peering partners. The company delivers low‑latency, high‑performance infrastructure with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency, automation, and compliance with local data‑sovereignty requirements. Gcore’s platform supports diverse industries and is trusted by thousands of customers to deploy compute workloads quickly and securely at the edge.

Challenge

Gcore's existing legacy CPU architectures limited performance-per-watt and scalability, hindering operational efficiency. As customer demand for Arm-based instances grew, Gcore needed a solution offering high core density without throttling, reduced power/cooling, OpenStack integration, and support for 5-7kW air-cooled racks to meet multiplayer cloud gaming's strict latency demands.

Solution

Gcore deployed Ampere Altra processors across its global infrastructure, achieving over 100 cores per instance with reduced power and rack footprint. Seamless OpenStack integration via Redfish APIs and Terraform, multi-vendor hardware flexibility, and native Arm64 cloud-native compatibility ensured rapid, smooth deployment. This solution proved ideal for latency-sensitive cloud gaming workloads.

Benefits

Ampere Altra processors delivered high performance with lower power draw, enabling full CPU utilization without throttling and significant operational/energy savings. Gcore achieved a scalable global rollout, expanded customer choice for Arm compute, and supported regional data residency. Consistent performance under load made it ideal for cloud gaming and other real-time, latency-sensitive applications.

“Ampere Altra processors allow us to offer high-performance Arm compute infrastructure that’s energy-efficient, scalable, and easy to deploy across our global cloud. The integration was seamless, requiring minimal tuning, and the power efficiency has helped us reduce operational costs while staying aligned with our sustainability goals. Ampere CPUs deliver consistent performance even under maximum load, which is essential for our customers running intensive workloads like cloud gaming, AI inference, and OpenStack-based orchestration.”
