Infomaniak Boosts Power Efficiency and Challenges Performance Consistency with Ampere® Powered Servers

27 September 2024

INTRODUCTION

Infomaniak faced a critical challenge: achieving consistent high performance for cloud storage while upholding its sustainability commitments. Infomaniak revolutionized its public cloud by integrating the HPE Proliant RL300 Gen 11 servers, powered by the Ampere® Altra® processor, which delivered unmatched performance consistency, significant power savings, and reinforced their leadership in ethical, energy-efficient cloud solutions.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Infomaniak is Switzerland’s largest web hosting company and a leading provider of ethical cloud services in Europe. Committed to sustainability, privacy, and human-centered values, it has reduced and offset 200% of its CO₂ emissions since 2007 and powers its services with local hydropower and solar. Infomaniak offers a broad suite of services—from collaboration tools to video‑on‑demand—serving diverse industries and customers.

Challenge

Infomaniak required a solution for consistent public cloud storage performance, as existing x86 servers exhibited disruptive fluctuations. Their air-cooled data centers demanded energy-efficient alternatives. Moreover, they needed a scalable infrastructure to meet growing client demands without escalating operational costs or compromising their strong sustainability commitments.

Solution

Infomaniak integrated the HPE Proliant RL300 Gen 11 servers, powered by the Ampere Altra processor, into their Ceph Cloud Storage. These single-threaded Ampere Altra processors ensured consistent performance even under peak loads, eliminating x86 fluctuations. Fast deployment was aided by superior power efficiency and seamless compatibility with Arm64-supported Debian systems, minimizing software adjustments.

Benefits

Switching to the HPE Proliant RL300 Gen 11 servers, powered by the Ampere Altra processor, yielded substantial benefits: reduced power consumption, consistent performance under varying workloads, and lower operational costs. Infomaniak achieved rapid, smooth deployment while shrinking its carbon footprint. Customers now enjoy a more stable cloud environment with higher throughput and improved user experience.

"Ampere-powered HPE Proliant RL300 servers delivered consistent performance and energy efficiency, which helped us reduce power consumption while enhancing the reliability of our cloud storage solutions. The seamless integration and quick deployment of these platforms allowed us to see immediate results, with better throughput and reduced energy usage. The switch to Ampere has been a game-changer for our sustainable cloud offerings.”

Not only did we see immediate benefits, but the servers have also continued to perform exceptionally well under our typical workloads. This transition to Ampere processors has proven to be the right choice, driving both business success and supporting our environmental goals."
