Amadeus Cuts Cost/Performance by up to 47% with Ampere

30 August 2023

INTRODUCTION

Amadeus, a premier global travel IT company, crafted seamless online experiences spanning the entire traveler's journey, from initial inspiration to booking and departure. Its shopping services, crucial for platforms like Kayak and Expedia, demanded immense processing power to search countless flights and seats. Faced with outgrowing thousands of on-prem and distributed cloud machines, Amadeus strategically migrated its core systems to Microsoft Azure, powered by Ampere Altra CPUs, aiming for optimized performance-per-price, reduced power consumption, and a streamlined hybrid development model for its compute-intensive workloads.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

A global leader in travel IT, Amadeus provided comprehensive online services, from flight search and booking to departure control, supporting major travel agencies. Processing thousands of complex transactions per second necessitated robust, efficient infrastructure. Amadeus transitioned its on‑prem systems to Microsoft Azure, leveraging Ampere® Altra® CPUs, to enhance scalability, cost-efficiency, and sustainability. This strategic shift optimized throughput and strengthened operational resilience, securing its position at the forefront of travel technology.

Challenges

Amadeus faced processing thousands of compute‑intensive transactions per second across dispersed on‑prem and multi‑cloud environments. They needed higher throughput, predictable low latency, and better performance‑to‑price while reducing power use and carbon footprint. Legacy x86 infrastructure and fragmented operations constrained scalability, efficiency, and migration speed. Operational complexity increased costs and risk during migration.

Solution

Amadeus migrated its on‑prem systems to Microsoft Azure powered by Ampere Altra CPUs and benchmarked Arm‑based Dp VMs with synthetic and real‑application tests. They ported shopping workloads to Azure, preserved latencies, and achieved higher throughput. Retaining on‑prem Ampere machines for CI/CD simplified testing and accelerated C++ code porting and validation.

Benefits

Microsoft Azure powered by Ampere Altra CPUs delivered 13–20% higher raw throughput and up to 47% better performance‑per‑price in real workloads. Amadeus lowered power consumption and carbon footprint, simplified operations, and reduced costs. Stable latencies at scale, faster porting, and OpenShift compatibility enabled incremental migration and quicker production rollouts across Azure.
