Ampere® Altra® Processors Power a More Efficient Data Center for Plesk’s WebOps Platform

08 July 2023

INTRODUCTION

Plesk customers, alongside developers and IT professionals, sought a simplified, open cloud hosting platform featuring powerful processors and a robust extension ecosystem to enhance productivity and streamline website management. However, existing x86 platforms struggled with critical limitations, including high power consumption, excessive heat generation, and suboptimal resource allocation, which collectively hindered efficiency and inflated operational costs. This pressing need for a new, more efficient architecture prompted Plesk to innovate. Learn how Plesk strategically implemented Ampere® Altra® processors as a transformative solution, not only addressing customer demands but also overcoming their platform's inherent x86 challenges with an architecture renowned for its "climate-friendly" power management, lower thermal design point, and superior price/performance.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Plesk is a global leader in WebOps hosting, empowering organizations, developers, and hosting businesses to efficiently run, automate, and grow their applications and websites. With robust software tools deployed on over 384,000 servers, Plesk automates 11 million websites and powers 15 million mailboxes worldwide. They provide a comprehensive, secure, and versatile toolkit, simplifying cloud development, enhancing productivity, and offering an open platform with a rich extension ecosystem for a broad spectrum of web professionals.

Challenges

Plesk customers required a simplified, open cloud hosting platform with powerful processors and a rich extension ecosystem for enhanced productivity. Developers and IT professionals sought efficient, scalable solutions for creating, securing, and managing websites. Existing x86 platforms struggled with power consumption, heat generation, and optimal resource allocation, hindering efficiency and increasing operational costs, prompting the need for a new architecture.

Solution

Plesk embraced Ampere® Altra® processors to address customer demands and platform limitations. The engineering team found Ampere's "climate-friendly" power management, lower thermal design point, superior price/performance, and optimized single-threaded core architecture compelling. Porting their core C++ code and adapting third-party dependencies to Arm64 was straightforward, ensuring a smooth transition to this powerful, efficient new platform.

Benefits

Plesk customers now benefit from cloud infrastructure marked by dramatically lower power consumption, reduced heat generation, and exceptional resource allocation. Ampere Altra processors deliver 57% better performance per watt, leading to significant cost reductions for hosting. Service providers can optimize datacenter space and pass savings to users, while minimizing carbon footprints and offering superior price/performance, especially in regions facing energy cost increases.

“One of the main advantages of using Arm architecture is cost efficiency, as less power is consumed,” he concludes. Ampere processors are designed to have the lowest possible energy consumption while delivering exceptional processing power.”
