Apache

What is Apache?

“Apache” commonly refers to the Apache HTTP Server — an extensible, open-source web server — or to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), which hosts many open-source projects used across the stack (Hadoop, Kafka, Spark, etc.).

Apache is characterized by three key components:

  • Modular server architecture: loadable modules for authentication, caching, proxying, scripting, and more.
  • Wide ecosystem: ASF projects cover web serving, data processing, messaging, and big data tooling.
  • Mature community & compatibility: longstanding support, portability, and integration options.

Why is Apache important?

Apache HTTP Server remains a versatile server for varied workloads, and Apache projects power much of the open-source data and streaming stack. Many Apache projects run efficiently on Arm-based servers (including Ampere Altra), offering options for power-efficient deployments.
