The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is a vendor-neutral organization under the Linux Foundation (LF), focused on advancing cloud native projects. It was established in 2015 after Google contributed Kubernetes 1.0 to the Linux Foundation. Since then, CNCF has grown to oversee catalog of projects at various stages—from 31 graduated projects to dozens of incubating and sandbox initiatives. This includes widely used tools like Kubernetes, Argo, Falco, containerd, Envoy, etcd, and OpenTelemetry.
As one of the largest open-source foundations,
and the leading authority in the cloud-native ecosystem, the CNCF plays a significant role in shaping the future of cloud infrastructure. For Ampere, the CNCF’s importance comes from our active collaboration with the foundation and its projects to ensure strong support and performance on Arm64 servers.
Ampere has worked alongside a number of CNCF projects to help improve their compatibility and efficiency on Arm64 architecture. Efforts such as Oracle’s donation of $3 million annually in Ampere A1 and A2 cloud credits through OCI have motivated many projects to optimize for Arm64, with many now delivering performance comparable to x86 platforms.
Major industry players like ARM, Google, Intel, Microsoft, and AWS are active CNCF sponsors, illustrating the foundation’s broad support. Additionally, CNCF organizes key industry events such as KubeCon and Cloud Native Con, which are among the largest open-source gatherings in North America and Europe.
